When I first read this my reaction was it’s hilarious. However, on reflection it’s a smart observation of the world we now live in. Unfortunately we’ve been hijacked by clickbait headlines, and seduced into believing the spin of anyone we look to for ‘leadership’.
Take road safety for example, and the hype we get anytime the road death toll is higher than expected norms. Every so-called expert jumps in on the opportunity to weigh in with their opinion on what we need to fix ‘the problem’. Then they explain it’s our goat track like roads, our older cars, our poor driving skills… blah, blah, blah. Generally this is followed with ‘we need more money spent on…’
Throwing more money at ‘the problem’ only blows smoke across the issues and creates opportunities for a certain few to take advantage as is well explained in the Dead Horse Theory.
I’m certain that spending big on road safety campaigns across our media has an incalculable impact on the boxes that must be ticked, the budgets that must be met, and the profits that must be made. Unfortunately after another horrific holiday road death toll we learn that ‘people just aren’t listening’ or they are simply ignoring the need to wear a safety belt, etc. etc.
Isn’t it way past time we did something truly radical and remarkable and bought back the only two things that can save us from ourselves? It may be old fashioned and remarkably simple, but common sense and individual responsibility are the bedrock principals we must return to.
Common sense and individual responsibility would ensure we drive safe cars sensibly while not impaired by tiredness, alcohol or drugs. And we most surely respect the rights of others we share the roads with at reasonable speeds while our families are in our vehicles, because we accept that not doing so can be potentially tragic. This of course also infers we have an adequate knowledge of the Road Code and a suitable level of driving skills.
Or you can blame others, the conditions, the road, the other driver, or that no one explained it to me. Give them safer cars and complacency will ensure nothing changes. No amount of money and endless theories can cure stupidity, a lack of common sense, or bring back a life.
